Three members of a hacking group allegedly responsible for malware campaigns targeting more than 100 US companies since at least 2015 are in custody and face a variety of felony charges, said the US Department of Justice.
Ukrainian nationals Dmytro Fedorov, Fedir Hladyr and Andrii Kopakov are members of the group known as FIN7 and are allegedly behind attacks against thousands of computers system and the theft of 15 million customer payment card numbers, which were sold on the DarkNet.
According to the DOJ, networks in 47 states have been breached by the hacking group. More attacks occurred overseas in the UK, Australia and France. Companies that have attributed attacks against them to FIN 7 include Chipotle, Chili’s, Arby’s, Red Robin, said the DOJ. The group has been linked to other data breaches.
“The naming of these FIN7 leaders marks a major step toward dismantling this sophisticated criminal enterprise,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Jay S. Tabb Jr. in a statement. “As the lead federal agency for cyber-attack investigations, the FBI will continue to work with its law enforcement partners worldwide to pursue the members of this devious group, and hold them accountable for stealing from American businesses and individuals.”
