With increasingly high verdicts and settlements, the new Comprehensive Insurance Disclosure Act in New York (CIDA), and an exceptionally creative plaintiffs’ bar, the casualty insurance market faces steep challenges. While these factors aren’t new, they also don’t appear to be abating. Casualty rates and underwriting methods must keep pace with – and ideally stay ahead of — risks, litigation trends, and uncertainty. This session will address how the market is responding to these ongoing obstacles and finding innovative ways to succeed.
Panelists:
The opioid crisis may be far from over, but insurers must still look ahead to the next major loss exposure. The industry is already feeling an impact from sexual abuse/molestation claims and seeing more litigation around PFAS, or “forever chemicals.” Consumer needs and attitudes also continue to shape the way society functions — will the “need it now” mentality lead to higher liability losses? This session will offer a glimpse into the future for casualty insurers and highlight areas where organizations may need to implement more rigorous risk management.
Panelists:
Facing a “retirement tsunami,” the insurance industry has the urgent task of refilling its ranks. Rather than merely finding new employees, the industry should look to mentor effectively in order to teach incoming insurance professionals to think strategically and creatively. What are the necessary skillsets to make insurance more than a transactional relationship? How can insurance firms attract the best talent? The industry has passed the awareness stage and must now take decisive actions.
Panelists:
Price increases have been moderating in recent quarters and industry results appear on the upswing. Has the industry reached an acceptable level of rate adequacy? What does “rate adequacy” mean in today’s market? How can brokers add value and build a truly consultative relationship with their clients? This session will offer an update on the dynamics underpinning the casualty market and what that means for the future outlook.
Panelists:
The day’s agenda has offered insight into what keeps the casualty market up at night. Already, leaders throughout the industry are taking action to chart a successful course for the future. Advisen’s annual “View from the Top” panel offers a rare opportunity to hear from the market’s movers, shakers, and risk-takers.
